The national and cultural identity is very strong, and has survived intact despite wars and politics since the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. It’s no minor achievement, and the Croats are justly proud of their independence.

It so happens that Hvar is a very good place to access anywhere in Croatia. You can travel along the coastline quite easily, and take the time to explore a quite astonishing array of local features including the fabulous islands like Mljet, Lastovo, Korcula, Vis and Brac, enjoying the extraordinary scenery.
For traveling around this part of Europe, Hvar is also an excellent place to stay planing the next attractions… North of it is Venice, and almost due west is Pescara on the east coast of the Italian peninsula, with direct road access to Rome. South is Greece and the incredible Adriatic coastline, and if you feel like really traveling in style, you can explore on the way to Athene the Adriatic by sea.
